| Today, October 28, 2009 is a major milestone for GLBT people. President Obama has signed a hate crimes law that makes it a federal offense for a person to assault another because of their sexual orientation or gender identity! This hate crimes law was named for Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. There have been more than 77,000 reports of hate crimes over the past 10 years. President Obama has stated there are still laws to change and hearts to open. Obama has called for the repeal of the military's don't ask, don't tell policy, so gays can serve openly in the military. President Obama also plans to urge Congress to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and pass the Domestic Partners Benefit and Obligations Act.
